Maria RousouQualifications:

Degree (Ptychio) in Biology (Direction of Environmental Biology), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2003-2007).

MSc Master of Science (Biological Diversity), University of Plymouth, UK (2008-2009).

Part-time PhD candidate (Marine Biology), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2011-On-going).

 

Maria has always been enthusiastic about the complexity and diversity of life. She received her degree (Ptychio) in Biology (direction of Environmental Biology) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece and her MSc in Biological Diversity at the University of Plymouth, UK. Since 2011 she has been a part-time PhD student at AUTh and her thesis topic is ‘Structure and function of soft-bottom macrobenthic communities at coastal Cyprus’.

 

Her area of expertise includes marine biodiversity, ecological assessments and conservation, and fishery discards. As part of her undergraduate and postgraduate studies, she carried out research on fishery discards in coastal areas of Cyprus. Furthermore, she has participated in the 2008 MEDITS program (International Bottom Trawl Survey in the Mediterranean).

 

Maria was an external partner of MER from 2009 and in 2010 she joined MER crew as a full time Marine Biodiversity Researcher until 2016. She has carried out several projects/studies, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for fish-farms and other human construction projects. She is licensed from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research of Cyprus to carry out the environmental monitoring of fish farms.

 

Maria is now recruited on a project basis to carry out specialized macrofauna taxonomy at MER Lab.
