Loreta Zagorskaitė

Qualifications

B.Sc. Environmental Hydrogeology and geoengineering, Vilnius University, Lithuania (2011 - 2016)

Loreta started her internship at MER right after getting her degree from Vilnius University, in environmental hydrogeology and geoengineering. During her second year at university she spent one semester at Christian Albrechts Universität in Kiel, Germany, studying marine geology and becoming interested in marine sciences. She decided to carry out an internship in marine sciences and was excited to stay with us for four months, work with our team in the lab and sea of sunny Cyprus.

At MER her main position was a laboratory assistant. Main responsibilities included sorting out macrofauna species from soft-sediment marine samples, including sieving the sediment samples and learning basic taxonomic characteristics. Assisted in water filtration to determine nutrient concentrations and chlorophyll a, assisted in taking metrics of mussels, abalone and sea urchins, measured biometrics (phenological analysis) of seagrass leaves and carried out granulometric analyses.

Her favourite part of the internship was working outdoors. She participated in field trips and assisted water and sediment sampling. Also had an opportunity to participate in sampling for the invasive Halophila stipulacea to assist a scientist from UCLA, USA.

One of her main interests is the development and implementation of innovatory practices for a sustainable environment in scientific and cultural perspective.
