emily leivers

Emily completed a 3-month internship at MERLab, contributing to a range of marine research, monitoring, and conservation projects in Cyprus. During the internship, she supported MER’s Marine Litter Programme through beach surveys, laboratory-based sorting and data management, including improving long-term datasets and data collection methods. She was also involved in Posidonia oceanica restoration under the RESPOCY project, assisting with field surveys, education tools and the preparation of restoration materials. Additional work included photoquadrat and ROV analysis for projects such as Seawise and Invasives, as well as drone footage analysis for turtle identification within the MedPAN project.

Alongside field and analytical work, she contributed to scientific writing, including sections of an Environmental Baseline Survey, and supported science communication through the creation of outreach materials and presentations. Throughout the internship, they developed strong skills in species identification, data handling, and applied marine research within a professional consultancy environment.
“My time at MER Lab gave me the opportunity to work across a wide range of projects, from marine litter monitoring and data analysis to Posidonia restoration and drone-based surveys. I particularly enjoyed the mix of fieldwork, lab work, and research, which helped me build confidence in both practical and scientific skills. I’m very grateful to the team for their support and for giving me the chance to contribute to meaningful marine conservation work.” – Emily.
