After Hassan Almetwaly completed his Erasmus+ Traineeship at the Marine Ecosystem Restoration (MER) Lab after finishing his Master’s degree in Marine Biology. At MER, he gained hands-on experience in marine environmental consulting and management, contributing to field assessments, ecological monitoring, and technical reporting. His work ranged from scientific diving for restoration projects to evaluating environmental impacts, including studies related to fish farms and their effects on surrounding habitats. As part of the MESOPHOS project, he assisted in assessing mesophotic ecosystems and documenting key findings that supported habitat management and restoration strategies. Hassan also participated in outreach activities, helping communicate marine restoration and conservation efforts to the public.

“My time at MER strengthened my path toward environmental management and consulting. I learned how to bridge science with management, conducting impact assessments, contributing to restoration plans, and working on projects like MESOPHOS that guide local impactful decisions. Evaluating and monitoring fish farms’ environmental impact and witnessing how collected data informs environmental action gave me a clear vision of the role I want to play in environmental management.”
