SEAMIND Marine Education Program for Children in Cyprus
June 20, 2025
First multi-day marine environmental education pilot programme completed
August 14, 2025The IRSAI project has just concluded a three-day training workshop showcasing its innovative applications in maritime surveillance and environmental monitoring.
IRSAI holds strong potential for public agencies, particularly those engaged in law enforcement, marine traffic monitoring, and pollution control. By integrating remote sensing technologies with artificial intelligence, it enhances the monitoring of coastal waters in a way that is cost-effective, automated, and user-friendly; a significant leap forward compared to the resource-intensive and often inefficient patrol methods currently in use across Cyprus and the wider region.
Coordinated by MER, the project brings together a multidisciplinary team of computer scientists, robotics experts, maritime specialists, marine scientists, and managers. Harnessing their collective expertise, IRSAI is developing a dual solution that will transform the surveillance capabilities of Limassol Bay, one of Cyprus’ most critical maritime areas.
A defining strength of IRSAI is its accessibility. The IRSAI Toolbox has been designed to be intuitive and practical, making it usable even for individuals with limited technical expertise. Participants in the workshop gained valuable insight into how IRSAI can be strategically incorporated into their operations, as well as hands-on training to make full use of the platform’s innovative features.
The workshop was held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation. The final day featured an exclusive live demonstration — not livestreamed — giving on-site participants a unique opportunity to witness IRSAI in action under real-world conditions.
Overview of the Three Days
- Wednesday, 23rd of July
Theme: Using Technology for Surveillance and Environmental Monitoring
Location: Frederick University (Limassol) & online
The opening day explored the broader role of technology in modern surveillance and environmental monitoring, setting the stage for IRSAI’s innovative contribution to maritime security. - Thursday, 24th of July
Theme: Presenting the IRSAI Innovations and the IRSAI Toolbox
Location: Frederick University (Limassol) & online
On the second day, the consortium presented the cutting-edge technologies behind IRSAI, including AI-driven drones, the SeaBot, and the forecasting model; demonstrating how these components integrate into a cohesive surveillance system. - Friday, 25th of July
Theme: Live Demonstration of IRSAI
Location: Archaeological Site of Amathounta – Limassol Old Port Restaurant
The final day brought theory into practice with a live demonstration at the Amathunta Marine Protected Area. Participants observed first-hand how IRSAI can detect, trace, and respond to pollution events, highlighting its real-world value for environmental protection.
The workshop drew participation from key agencies including the Department of Environment, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Cyprus Port and Marine Police, and the Ministry of Defence. Sessions were led by the IRSAI’s scientific team, and attendees engaged in technical presentations, interactive discussions and finally a hands-on demonstration of the IRSAI system’s innovations.
