Marilia’s internship was 4 months long. During that time, she immersed herself in a variety of tasks in both the laboratory and field. This hands-on experience allowed her to explore a wide range of topics and develop a strong foundation in marine science and environmental research.

In her own words:

“One of the greatest aspects of working at MER was the opportunity to be involved in such a diverse array of projects. From environmental impact assessments and biota monitoring to litter surveys and Posidonia oceanica seagrass analysis, I was able to contribute meaningfully to the lab’s work. Additionally, I took part in citizen science initiatives, educational activities, and managed large datasets for fisheries and elasmobranch bycatch studies. The exposure to such varied areas of research helped me gain a broad set of skills, truly valuable for my future.

What truly set MER apart for me, however, was the atmosphere. The people at MER were not only highly skilled and passionate about marine science but also incredibly welcoming and supportive. Their willingness to share their expertise made every day a new learning opportunity, and I felt truly inspired by the dedication of the team. Whether in the lab or out in the field, the team fostered a collaborative environment that made me feel like an integral part of the research being done.

My time at MER was a pivotal experience that reinforced my passion for marine biology and directly influenced my decision to pursue a master’s degree in the field. I am currently studying marine biology at Stockholm University, and I am grateful for the strong foundation that MER provided me, both in terms of skills and inspiration. The people, environment, and projects left an indelible mark on my academic journey, and I will always value my time spent there.”
