We are excited to announce the launch of the Increasing Aquaculture Sustainability Using Sponges (IASUS) project, a pioneering initiative aimed at increasing the sustainability of Cyprus’ aquaculture industry through the innovative use of sponges with biomedical potential in Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems.

The project is driven by four key pillars:

1. Bridging knowledge gaps: Developing the necessary infrastructure, tools, and research to facilitate the adoption of IMTA systems, while advancing scientific knowledge in this field.
2. Addressing sustainability challenges: Tackling both national and EU-level challenges related to sustainable development and laying the groundwork for the long-term success of these innovations.
3. Enhancing collaboration: Promoting increased collaboration between Cypriot and European entities to foster knowledge exchange and joint research efforts. Utilizing the knowledge and insights of IASUS, a key action will be the preparation and leading of a Horizon Europe proposal.
4. Strengthening capacity: Building the capacity of Cypriot research and innovation entities to lead future collaborative projects with European stakeholders.

The IASUS project is a forward-looking initiative designed to address global challenges such as food security, overexploited fisheries, and unsustainable agricultural yields. By leveraging sponges in IMTA systems, the project aims to align with the growing need for more sustainable aquaculture practices while positioning Cyprus as a leader in innovative and eco-friendly marine farming.
