OCEAN with David Attenborough: free screening in Nicosia on 30 September

Marine & Environmental Research (MER) Lab invites you to a free screening of OCEAN with David Attenborough in Nicosia on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. Join us for an evening of film, conversation with local marine experts and a reception exploring the connection between marine conservation and our food choices.

Narrated by David Attenborough, the documentary takes viewers through coral reefs, kelp forests and the open ocean. It explores the pressures facing marine life, including destructive fishing practices and coral bleaching, while showing how ecosystems can recover when they are effectively protected. The film connects the health of the ocean with the wellbeing of the planet and presents a hopeful case for action.

After the screening, a discussion with local marine experts will bring these themes closer to home, exploring challenges facing our seas and practical approaches to protecting and restoring marine ecosystems. For MER, connecting scientific evidence with public participation is part of our wider marine outreach and communications work.

The evening will conclude with a cocktail reception featuring selected edible invasive alien species. Guests will have an opportunity to taste these species and consider how food can open a conversation about ecological change and more sustainable choices.

The event is organised by Pristine Seas – National Geographic Society and Revive Our Ocean, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR), the Cyprus Environment Foundation, MER Lab, the Oceanography Center of the University of Cyprus. The event is funded by DFMR.
